South Unit Ranger Richard Sherman had previously guided me to a freshwater spring about 14-15 miles, by foot, from the start. The second side of the brochure offers more photographs of the park, including a close-up image of a bison and dramatic photographs of the landscape and its features. The only way in is via a gravel road, then two-track, that runs East from the BIA 27, across from the White River Visitor Center. This is a significant omission. The badlands is one of the world's most rapidly changing landscapes: on average the formations lose an inch every year, but new badlands are forming as the old ones melt away. From here, maps indicate that the road does eventually reenter the unit, but not before it becomes impassable. Unpaved road may be slipper in winter or during thunderstorms. SD 240 (Badlands Loop Road) leads to the Ben Reifel Visitor Center. This particular spring has been capped and fills a cattle trough, the overflow spilling into subterranean streams. Some animals look familiar, like in the foreground, where a large saber-toothed cat (Hoplophoneus) in hunts a small horse-like critter without a mane or tail (Mesohippus). The south side of the map is bordered by Route 18, which is close to Nebraska, the state South of South Dakota. Beneath this text are two map insets, one of the larger southwestern-South Dakota area and one of the much smaller Cedar Pass area of the park, which contains all of the park's official trails. Your correspondent started early, as local dawn fog mingled seamlessly with traveling haze. It also features a large illustration of what the park might have looked like in the distant past, when dinosaurs roamed the landscape. The milky waters of the White River run into banks of Badlands terrain, with some grasses growing in the area. Several inexpensive hotels, and two campgrounds offering RV hook-ups, can be found in the town of Wall, eight miles north of the park, on Interstate 90. Open a gate, then take another right. If youre trailblazing to the top, be aware that hand and footholds are sometimes less solid then they look. Many visitors will arrive from I-90. The small amounts of water found are not drinkable or filterable due to the high sediment content. At night the prairie winds came up, carrying the clean scent of sweetgrass. SD In fact, they're no different than some of the ATV-maintained hiking trails at Wind Cave National Park and other prairie parks, except that there are no blazes, and there are lots of forks, and occasionally a two track becomes a single cattle trail or no trail at all. Last Friday, your correspondent ventured into Badlands National Park's seldom seen Palmer Creek unit. As darkness began, I walked and scooped sardines (dines in the shorthand of the initiated) with my pocketknife from a can. In fact, the construction of this route was stipulated in order for the park to obtain authorization back in 1929. Hikers in the South Unit must be experienced map readers. Badlands National Park, located in South Dakota, is part of the National Park Service, within the Department of the Interior. For me, this was the first park I visited when I first headed into the Great American West back in 1997. I parked there and a friend gave me a ride to the Northwest corner of the unit, near the Red Shirt community. But, for those who are interested in doing so, there's very little information out there. Nellie had mentioned that there was a well-worn hiking path, and we found it and descended into the badlands, where we wandered aimlessly amid the formations, swallows flitting around our heads. While the Loop Road does indeed present a stunning landscape through the frame of the windshield, there is so much more to Badlands than can be appreciated from the ol Studebaker. In laymens terms, this means that there are a lot of skeletal remains here from mammals that lived roughly 30 to 50 million years ago. It is also recommended that wilderness campers take along a compass and topographical map (available from Trails Illustrated, 800-962-1643, and from the visitors center). The formations of the Palmer Creek Unit are indeed spectacular -- sharper, more delicate-seeming, more severely eroded than any we'd seen before, and imbued with a vibrant array of colors, from chalky whites to deep rouges. Fog Creek crochets its way through the Garden of the Gods like a nest of snakelets turned loose on a field mouse convention. At this point, Id walked about fifteen miles of rocky terrain and the sun was sinking. Badlands National Park is still quite permissive when it comes to exploration -- visitors are free to wander and pitch camp almost anywhere they please. The formations, some more than 1,000 feet high, were distinctly striped, like the walls of the Grand Canyon, with occasional bands stained brick red where iron-rich soils had oxidized. We bounced along the horrible roads, which were really little more than mud slicks cut across the grasslands, and, after making only one wrong turn, managed to drive to the edge of Stronghold Table. Hold onto a cedar or some rabbitbrush branches if you can. At dusk you can sit and emulate those amber waves. And since you don't need cell service for geotracking to work, you can keep your phone on airplane mode, use it as a GPS and use very little battery. Those seeking a true wilderness experience in Badlands will likely need to journey into the parks backcountry and just see what the hell is really out there. Passing motorists gave us small-town waves, the residents we spoke with appeared genuinely pleased to play host to curious visitors, and not one person seemed to mind that we were driving across private land to reach the national park. So out here, you share the trail with cattle, and occasionally cross a fence or two. The spires, pinnacles, and ravines which frustrated earlier travelers provide a visual "gateway to forever" with views that can stretch over fifty miles, offering solitude and serenity. For centuries humans have viewed South Dakota's celebrated Badlands with a mix of dread and fascination. You can follow this narrow, scenic canyon nestled between pink and white cliffs for about a dozen miles before you run into the edge of Cuny Table, which is what I did. The creek pass became a thick, almost impassable cedar thicket, that seemed to wind forever through brush I somtimes had to crawl through but gradually it wound its way down off Cuny Table. First time to Badlands National Park? Westbound travelers on I-90 should use exit 131.
